Background

I studied undergraduate mathematics at Merton College, Oxford in 1996-2000. My focus was mainly on applied maths and physics and I graduated with a first class Honours Master of Mathematics degree.

In 2000-2001 I was a graduate student at University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada. My topic of research was "Annular Displacement Flow of non-Newtonian Fluids" in application to primary oil well cementing process sponsored by Schlumberger. I completed my thesis in January 2002 and was awarded Master of Science degree. Subsequently I co-authored four papers on the results of this work published in major scientific journals.

In 2002 I joined Schlumberger Riboud Product Center near Paris, France as a Development Engineer to implement results of my research into company's products. In 2003 I moved back to UK, continuing working with Schlumberger now as an independent consultant. A summary of my recent projects can be found here.

Other Background

I am bilingual English & Russian and decent in German having been a pupil at Kardinal-von-Galen-Schule in Mettingen, Germany back in 1994. I can also give wrong directions to the unsuspecting in French and Greek.

I have done a few other things besides mathematics and programming. One of the most fun was working for Oxford Archaeotechnics during my time at university. The job was to conduct geophysical surveys to detect and classify archaeological features - mostly for planning permission purposes. It involved walking ridiculous distances in some of the prettiest spots in England, occasionally driving one of these and getting very wet and cold on the regular basis. In Vancouver I spent altogether too much time on karate. Very enjoyable, slightly masochistic and the only regrettable thing is that I wasn't any good at it.
